Fencing Wi The Ripper..

I find that time-lines and the sequence of events are interesting to look at,, ones that make a proper exploration of this aspect with the letters and tape included are rare,, so I offer up some of my own ideas in this matter..
I hope people will think for themselves,,and ask, what really lead the cops to believe the letters and tape from Sunderland were genuine from the killer...??

Lets look at the first two letters which arrived in March 78,, one was sent to Oldfield and one to the Mirror.. They both claimed the Preston murder as one of the series and state that the cops had their body count wrong.. They also predicted that the next death would be an old gal in Manchester or Liverpool,, the first letter to Oldfield made a particular remark about having a close call in Huddersfield,, and when you consider the recorded circumstances of that night,, it is a reasonable conclusion that he did indeed have problems that night and the remark demonstrated a knowledge of events not publicly available..
The author could reasonably expect Oldfield to pick up on that remark,, the second letter was sent to the Daily Mirror,, and one can conclude that he wished media attention regarding his Jack Ripper promise to do an old one next in Manchester or Liverpool.. Until such time that this promise came true, one would tend to dismiss the  Mirror letter as the work of a crank,, after all they were signed,,, Jack The Ripper...  But the prophecy did in fact come true a few weeks later ,, exactly as promised,, and then the killings stopped for a year..

Four months later the Police included the Preston murder into the official Ripper count but with no acknowledgement of the letters from Sunderland.
The inclusion of Preston also came with the introduced ambiguity of a murder which had previously been eliminated from the series (Yvonne Pearson) being added at the same time.. It is most likely that she was included for tactical reasons,,but,,.
For all that the killer/letter-writer could know,, the cops might have connected Preston themselves and wrongly attributed Mrs Pearson..
If he perceived this as a bit of clever fencing or a genuine mistake from from the cops is impossible to say.. But one only needs to look at what happened next (Halifax) to understand that deliberate and considered steps were taken which removed all doubt..
A third letter arrived with another forecast of death and then a girl died eleven days later after a year of inactivity.!
An unusual triangular weapon was used for the first time and it left unique wounds that could never be mistaken..
A bite mark positively connected with Preston and oil found on the envelope connected his letters positively with oil and metal particles found on the girls body.. Bootprints found at the scene matched earlier murders,, and the next time he killed,, he used that triangular weapon again..

He introduced a unique weapon that could not be confused,, put his old wellies on which had left prints on other bodies and sheets,, bit the girl just like Preston.. The weapon he used left traces of oil and carborundum and the letter warning of her death came with the same oil traces on it.. Couple this with his other trademarks and usual Mo, he could hardly of made it more plain,, THIS KILLER WANTED THEM TO KNOW WHEN IT WAS HIM.. His campaign of terror actually required that there should be no doubt in this matter and he made his work uniquely recognisable.

Halifax was his second attempt to publicly connect his Jack Ripper letters from Sunderland with the Yorkshire Ripper series and this time he succeeded..
It cost another girl her life,,, and that was when the cops publicly acknowledged his Jack Ripper letters  and began checking with engineering firms in the NE..
Soon after his letters were publicly acknowledged, the tape arrived from Sunderland..
Police who previously suspected a deliberate false trail were now given a genuine wear-side voice look for..
The cruel twist was that the tape made another prediction of death which also came true a few weeks later, there could be no doubt who it was,, the triangular weapon had been used again..
And then the murders stopped again,,,???

For eighteen months they turned Sunderland upside down an sideways looking for that man with that voice,, but they simply could not find him.. The letters and tape were eventually dismissed as a hoax but the reasons they were held to be genuine from the killer still hold true today.
.
The letters and tape are a part of the weave and fabric of the Yorkshire Ripper case,, they fall in place around  facts and the deaths so perfectly they are like abbreviation marks..  The only reasonable conclusion is that they are 100% genuine from the killer..There was only one valid argument against the letters being genuine from the killer,, surviving victims had not spoken to a Geordie...

It is a curious puzzle,,  clearly,, the man left many clues to convince  the cops that his letters and tape were genuine, and yet that man could not be found.. The surviving girls had not spoken to a man with a NE accent.. they could not place the accent of their attacker,, they both agreed (Marilyn Moore and Maureen Long) that he was not a local man and one even suggested he might be from Liverpool ,, in the opposite direction from where the letters and tape came from....
After the tape arrived ACC Oldfield warned that an "innocent stranger" was being condemned to a gruesome death because someone in the NE was protecting him.. His prophecy came true but that man with that voice simply could not be found,, the search that was launched really should have found him..

Both lines of reasoning are correct,,
Killer is a Geordie because the facts and forensic links prove the letters and tape must be from the killer..and they do,, they are not hoax letters..
Killer is not a Geordie because the girls who survived did not speak to one,
this line of reason is also perfectly correct..
It is not a take your pick situation both lines of reasoning are correct,
and one begins to see why Oldfield suggested a person in the NE was protecting him..

The two conclusions obviously contradict one another,
but they both have to be addressed..
Oldfield's solution was to consider a third party, he assumed there must be an accomplice in the NE..
But he suffered a heart attack and was off the case for many months, the investigation fell into the hands of others.. It looks like they may have resolved the conflicting information simply by ignoring the girls who said he was not a Geordie..
For eighteen months they turned Sunderland upside down and failed to find him.

The failed search for that man in the NE attracted so much criticism and public out cry,, politicians became involved and the top cops in Yorkshire were chucked off the case..
The failed search for that man was the thing that broke their enquiry and it was only a mans voice on a tape.. Prior to its arrival Police suspected a deliberate false trail was being laid by a local killer.. The arrival of the tape was perfectly timed,, the Police really had no choice but to chase after it,, after all that voice did belong to a living breathing Wear-side man , did it not,?? Find him and even if he was not the Ripper he would surely know who it was,, the tape predicted another murder and the cops chased after the best clue they had..
I think they were quite right to do so under the circumstances,,
that voice will have been recognised by someone..

But it was only a mans voice on a tape..
Why send a tape in the first place,,?

The envelope the tape arrived in was very odd in appearance,

The other letters had been handwritten but this envelope
was printed and it looks very peculiar indeed...
A collection of malformed and mismatched lettering
that was obviously an attempted to disguise the authors hand
while a voice was presented..
Seven hundred written words were previously recorded
in the letters,, which seems to makes the attempt to
disguise the authors printing rather pointless..
The address could more easily have been handwritten
like the others,,but it was not,, and the author signed
his usual Jack The Ripper signature on the inside
just to make sure they knew it was from him..

Yeah ,, the tape that fooled the Cops for thirty years
is a fascinating puzzle al-right..

See it here..

My view is that the cops were sent a voice they were never meant to find,,
and that the man had been persuaded or coerced into reading it..
His  fate can remains unknown,, ??
but there is an inescapable simple-logic
solution available to a serial killer...
